    A Proposed Framework in Developing Sustainable Manufacturing Initiatives Using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)

    This paper proposes an evaluation framework of input elements in developing sustainable manufacturing (SM) initiatives using the hierarchical structure of sustainability indicators set developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (US NIST) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Determining priority input elements in the development process is essential to ensure that SM initiatives are responsive to the demands of sustainability at firm level. This evaluation exposes a challenge due to the multi-criteria nature of the problem and the presence of subjective criteria with limited available information on their measurement systems. The use of AHP in the context of the hierarchical structure of the US NIST sustainability indicators set provides a comprehensive and promising approach in identifying fundamental inputs in developing effective programs and initiatives that address sustainability. The contribution of this work lies on presenting a framework that could guide decision-makers, in a way that is simple and comprehensive, in their attempt to promote sustainability.     A robust evaluation of sustainability initiatives with analytic network process (ANP)

    [EN] This paper presents a methodology on evaluating sustainable manufacturing initiatives using analytic network process (ANP) as its base.The evaluation method is anchored on the comprehensive sustainable manufacturing framework proposed recently in literature. A numerical example that involves an evaluation of five sustainable manufacturing initiatives is shown in this work. Results show that sustainable manufacturing implies enhancing customer and community well-being by means of addressing environmental issues related to pollution due to toxic substances, greenhouse gas emissions and air emissions. To test the robustness of the results, two approaches are introduced in this work: (1) using Monte Carlo simulation and (2) introducing structural changes on the evaluation model. It suggests that the results are robust to random variations and to marginal changes of the network structure.     An integrated grey-based multi-criteria decision-making approach for supplier evaluation and selection in the oil and gas industry

    Purpose The oil and gas industry is a crucial economic sector for both developed and developing economies. Delays in extraction and refining of these resources would adversely affect industrial players, including that of the host countries. Supplier selection is one of the most important decisions taken by managers of this industry that affect their supply chain operations. However, determining suitable suppliers to work with has become a phenomenon faced by these managers and their organizations. Furthermore, identifying relevant, critical and important criteria needed to guide these managers and their organizations for supplier selection decisions has become even more complicated due to various criteria that need to be taken into consideration. With limited works in the current literature of supplier selection in the oil and gas industry having major methodological drawbacks, the purpose of this paper is to develop an integrated approach for supplier selection in the oil and gas industry. Design/methodology/approach To address this problem, this paper proposes a new uncertain decision framework. A grey-Delphi approach is first applied to aid in the evaluation and refinement of these various available criteria to obtain the most important and relevant criteria for the oil and gas industry. The grey systems theoretic concept is adopted to address the subjectivity and uncertainty in human judgments. The grey-Shannon entropy approach is used to determine the criteria weights, and finally, the grey-EDAS (evaluation based on distance from average solution) method is utilized for determining the ranking of the suppliers. Findings To exemplify the applicability and robustness of the proposed approach, this study uses the oil and gas industry of Iran as a case in point. From the literature review, 21 criteria were established and using the grey-Delphi approach, 16 were finally considered. The four top-ranked criteria, using grey-Shannon entropy, include warranty level and experience time, relationship closeness, supplier’s technical level and risks which are considered as the most critical and influential criteria for supplier evaluation in the Iranian oil and gas industry. The ranking of the suppliers is obtained, and the best and worst suppliers are also identified. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the results using the proposed methodology are robust. Research limitations/implications The proposed approach would assist supply chain practicing managers, including purchasing managers, procurement managers and supply chain managers in the oil and gas and other industries, to effectively select suitable suppliers for cooperation. It can also be used for other multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) applications. Future works on applying other MCDM methods and comparing them with the results of this study can be addressed. Finally, broader and more empirical works are required in the oil and gas industry. Originality/value This study is among the first few studies of supplier selection in the oil and gas industry from an emerging economy perspective and sets the stage for future research.     Appropriate criteria set for personnel promotion across organizational levels using analytic hierarchy process (AHP)

    [EN] Currently, there has been limited established specific set of criteria for personnel promotion to each level of the organization. This study is conducted in order to develop a personnel promotion strategy by identifying specific sets of criteria for each level of the organization. The complexity of identifying the criteria set along with the subjectivity of these criteria require the use of multi-criteria decision-making approach particularly the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Results show different sets of criteria for each management level which are consistent with several frameworks in literature. These criteria sets would help avoid mismatch of employee skills and competencies and their job, and at the same time eliminate the issues in personnel promotion such as favouritism, glass ceiling, and gender and physical attractiveness preference. This work also shows that personality and traits, job satisfaction and experience and skills are more critical rather than social capital across different organizational levels.     On K-Means Clustering with IVIF Datasets for Post-COVID-19 Recovery Efforts

    The recovery efforts of the tourism and hospitality sector are compromised by the emergence of COVID-19 variants that can escape vaccines. Thus, maintaining non-pharmaceutical measures amidst massive vaccine rollouts is still relevant. The previous works which categorize tourist sites and restaurants according to the perceived degree of tourists’ and customers’ exposure to COVID-19 are deemed relevant for sectoral recovery. Due to the subjectivity of predetermining categories, along with the failure of capturing vagueness and uncertainty in the evaluation process, this work explores the use k-means clustering with dataset values expressed as interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. In addition, the proposed method allows for the incorporation of criteria (or attribute) weights into the dataset, often not considered in traditional k-means clustering but relevant in clustering problems with attributes having varying priorities. Two previously reported case studies were analyzed to demonstrate the proposed approach, and comparative and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results show that the priorities of the criteria in evaluating tourist sites remain the same. However, in evaluating restaurants, customers put emphasis on the physical characteristics of the restaurants. The proposed approach assigns 12, 15, and eight sites to the “low exposure”, “moderate exposure”, and “high exposure” cluster, respectively, each with distinct characteristics. On the other hand, 16 restaurants are assigned “low exposure”, 16 to “moderate exposure”, and eight to “high exposure” clusters, also with distinct characteristics. The characteristics described in the clusters offer meaningful insights for sectoral recovery efforts. Findings also show that the proposed approach is robust to small parameter changes. Although idiosyncrasies exist in the results of both case studies, considering the characteristics of the resulting clusters, tourists or customers could evaluate any tourist site or restaurant according to their perceived exposure to COVID-19

    Probabilistic fuzzy decision network analyses in the development of a sustainable manufacturing strategy

    Manufacturing strategy is widely recognized in literature as an important link in creating competitiveness of manufacturing firms. With current global concerns on sustainability, manufacturing industry becomes a focal point of discussion that is brought about by the impact of its manufactured products and manufacturing processes on the triple bottom line. There is thus a need for the manufacturing industry to shift from merely market-based perspective of competitiveness into more holistic and challenging issues of sustainability. Current literature has exclusive discussions on these two approaches and lacks cohesive framework that assimilates competitiveness and sustainability particularly in content strategy development. This work integrates the classical model of manufacturing strategy and sustainability into a comprehensive framework that attempts to develop a sustainable manufacturing strategy. Since this decision-making process involves several objective and subjective decision components that are linked in complex relationships in uncertain conditions, a probabilistic fuzzy analytic network process (PROFUZANP) is proposed. This method addresses the conditions of a quasi-collaborative group decision-making that best describes the expert group carried out in this work. In the proposed method, analytic network process (ANP) addresses the complex interrelationships of various decision components fuzzy set theory (FST) captures the vagueness of individual decision-making and probability theory with simulation is used to describe the randomness and uncertainty in group decision-making. The proposed framework is able to address other pertinent issues such as firm sizes, stakeholders interests that drive competitive priorities and the inherent strategic responses of manufacturing firms toward sustainability. The novel contribution of this work lies in (1) developing a framework that integrates manufacturing strategy and sustainability in identifying the content of a sustainable manufacturing strategy, and (2) proposing a methodological framework that holistically addresses uncertainty in group decision-making especially in modelling quasi-collaborative group decisions

    A simulation-based fuzzy analytic network process approach in developing sustainable manufacturing strategy

    This paper adopts a probabilistic fuzzy analytic network process (PROFUZANP) approach in developing a sustainable manufacturing strategy. In this hybrid method, analytic network process handles the complexity of the problem structure under consideration, fuzzy set theory is used to describe vagueness in individual decision-making and probability theory is used to handle randomness in group decision-making. This holistic methodological approach addresses complexity and uncertainty both in individual and group decision-making which is useful in modeling group decisions such as developing a sustainable manufacturing strategy. In this work, an inclusive approach of integrating traditional manufacturing strategy concepts and sustainable manufacturing principles is proposed as a unifying decision model. The proposed decision structure adopts the hierarchical structure of manufacturing strategy and explores the presence of strategic responses and stakeholders\u27 interests as significant components of sustainability. Using PROFUZANP, the decision model identifies the content policies of sustainable manufacturing strategy. This content strategy is expected to address both competitiveness and sustainability of manufacturing firms. Results are reported in this paper along with insights and future work.     Ocena proekologicznej agendy festiwalowej na przykładzie festiwalu Sinulog

    This work advances previous work on greening festival management by using the Sinulog festiwal as a case in point, as it has conditions resonating with most festivals in the Philippines and some other emerging economies. An analysis based on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) was constructed based on an earlier work that provided some insights on assessing the green management initiatives of the festival organization. The weaknesses in the SWOT analysis are considered inputs to a root cause analysis to identify the fundamental green management issues. The two analyses suggest that the festival organization has a limited view of the green management agenda. Four elements are found crucial for greening the Sinulog festival: crafting an environmental policy; allocating financial and human resources for implementing greening initiatives; partnership agreements with local environmental institutions; and partnership agreements with sponsors who proactively support the environmental agenda. These insights may have value for other festivals in their greening agendas.W artykule szerzej omówiono zagadnienia poruszone w poprzedniej pracy autorów, dotyczącej tzw. zielonego (proekologicznego) zarządzania wydarzeniami na przykładzie festiwalu Sinulog, odzwierciedlającego realia większości tego typu imprez organizowanych na Filipinach i w kilku innych krajach rozwijających się. Przeprowadzono analizę mocnych i słabych stron, szans i zagrożeń (SWOT), opierając się na wcześniejszym opracowaniu, w którym udostępniono spostrzeżenia na temat oceny inicjatyw zielonego zarządzania organizacją festiwali. Słabe strony poddane analizie SWOT zostały wykorzystane jako dane wejściowe w analizie przyczyn źródłowych (Root Cause Analysis – RCA) do zidentyfikowania głównych problemów zarządzania proekologicznego. Na podstawie wyników tych dwóch analiz można stwierdzić, że organizatorzy festiwali w ograniczonym zakresie uwzględniają program zielonego zarządzania.     A sustainable manufacturing strategy decision framework in the context of multi-criteria decision-making

    The present paper proposes a sustainable manufacturing strategy decision framework that integrates classical manufacturing strategy and sustainable manufacturing. Former approaches in these two fields were not inclusive; thus, an integrative decision framework is necessary. Along with this integration, the inclusion of major issues directly associated with manufacturing sustainability, such as firm size, various interests of different stakeholders and strategic responses, becomes a highlight of the proposed framework. Using an appropriate approach, the framework could provide the content of a sustainable manufacturing strategy which is helpful for manufacturing decision-makers in promoting both competitiveness and sustainability. Hypotheses are developed from the proposed framework. A review of a possible methodological approach is shown with a strong emphasis on multi-criteria decision-making. A discussion of a future work, following the decision framework, is also presented. The contribution of the present work lies in the development of a comprehensive decision framework that attempts to integrate a manufacturing strategy and a sustainable manufacturing. © 2015 Jordan Journal of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
